Picture books for practising numbers with young children

One Thing by Lauren Child
The other week we went to Nomad Books for a book signing event with Charlie & Lola author Lauren Child, and we bought the book One Thing (Hachette Children’s Group, £6.99). The book is not only sweet and funny like we’ve come to expect from Charlie & Lola, but this one is also good for explaining the concept of zero and practising counting. It tells the story of Lola who is told she can get one thing, but then wants two things–first from her mum and then from Charlie. Funny and useful for numeracy skills!

Spinderella by Julia Donaldson and Sebastien Braun
For understanding the importance of maths, I like the story about Spinderella from Gruffalo-author Julia Donaldson and Sebastien Braun (Egmont, £10.99), which is coming out on 6 October. We received the picture book to review, and it tells the story about a little spider who likes her numbers and plays football with her family. Her brothers fail to understand they need to count to ensure a fair game with an equal number of players in each team, and Spinderella gets frustrated they don’t share her passion for numbers. The Hairy Godmother brings a bit of magic to the family, sorting out football shoes for everyone after Spinderella has counted their legs. Spinderella is a sweet book for both boys and girls, combining numbers with topics of interest to three to five year olds-creepy crawlies, magic fairies and football.
