Toddler’s first charity walk in aid of Borne

On Tuesday, I was standing in Park Walk filming Baby Girl ‘walking’. She was participating in her very first charity walk Kidimanjaro in aid of Borne, the charity which is a collaboration between Chelsea and Westminster Health Charity and the maternity team at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. I was filming her with my phone to send a snippet of her ‘walking’ to her grandparents and godparents who had kindly made donations on her fundraising page in the week before. The only problem was that there was very little ‘walking’ to show them.

The charity walk in Chelsea, which 200 children participated in, had started at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, and we made it around the corner to Park Walk before Baby Girl decided she didn’t want to follow all the other children wearing the same t-shirt as her. She stopped, created a ‘traffic jam’, and the short snippet I got simply showed Baby Girl on her own standing still in the middle of what looked like an empty road.

But with a bit of encouragement in the form of soap bubbles, flags and balloons, she was back on track and could run to catch up with the others. I had to pick her up now and then and we probably made a few more stops than most, looking at interesting things we found in the street along the way, but she did it.

Baby Girl made it to the finishing line at Chelsea Old Town Hall, where there were lots of exciting surprises and treats, including an opportunity to have a medal photo taken with former England Rugby World Cup winner Will Greenwood. For Baby Girl, the best part still seemed to be simply receiving a medal – her first ever – and she insisted on bringing this wonderful jewel to nursery to show her friends the next day.

Helping raise money that will go towards vital research into premature birth is great fun!
