How to decide if mum is ready for potty training

Some mums talk about not only children being ready for potty training, but also the importance of establishing if mum is ready for potty training. I was both nervous and excited before starting, and now that we’re done with nappies, I’ve realised there are two important questions mums should consider before potty training a little one in London.

How well do you know London?
As soon as you start taking your potty-trained child out and about, London suddenly looks very different. You’re constantly thinking: “Where is the nearest toilet at this moment in time?” It could be when you’re stuck in Halloween traffic on King’s Road, or when you’ve finally managed to drag your husband into your favourite interior shop. It’s practically like always planning an escape route and walking around a little bit more tense than before.

How good are you at reverse parking?
If there’s a 2-year-old in the back seat shouting ‘pee pee’ you’ll be extremely motivated to get into that one tight parking space, which you might normally not have wanted to attempt getting into. I recently had a man come up to me after seeing me park to say: “Many men wouldn’t have been able to do that, you know?” I think the difference between me and many men would really be that I usually feel extremely motivated to park; I don’t want to park in a couple of minutes when I’ve found a more suitable parking space–I want to park right this second when I need to run out of the car.

Happy potty training!
