Exercising after a caesarean section

When I did a new pilates class in June last year and did some exercises that felt awkward, I mentioned to the instructor that I’d had a c-section 10 months earlier.

I felt a bit stupid when I said it out loud, but I was under the impression that it was worth being careful if something didn’t feel right, and I hadn’t been used to going to a class and feeling the peer pressure.

But apart from one embarrassing moment in the gym, I had a pretty problem-free recovery after my c-section. I started exercising after receiving the all-clear at the six-week follow up, and at first, I only had private at-home pilates sessions with Anne from Jelly Belly PT.

The at-home pilates sessions were ideal for me. I didn’t have to get Baby Girl and me out of the house, so it wasn’t too stressful and although I tried to have Baby Girl sleep through my sessions, she could ‘participate’ in some exercises if necessary.

A few times I was forced to breastfeed her during the session, but I could then continue doing pelvic floor exercises, so even that worked.

Jelly Belly PT specialises in post-caesarean recovery, so I felt very safe and liked the gentle approach to getting back in shape. The best part, however, was that I forced myself to set aside an hour every week for this very important cause!
