Making salt dough creations with kids

When I packed last week’s artworks into the children’s art storage boxes today one of the things I put in was a black star. It was Big Boy’s first solo salt dough creation.

Last week we made salt dough with two parts of flour, one part of salt and one part of water. It was super easy to make, and the kids made a variety of animals and shapes with the soft dough. Big Girl made cute sea creatures while Big Boy used shapes and made a mouse together with me.

After baking their creations in the oven on a very low heat they were ready to be painted. They took around an hour to bake–and longer for some of the bigger ones–so we saved the painting for the next day.

Making salt dough reminded me of my own childhood. It was great fun. Easy to make. Easy to mould.

The only thing I couldn’t remember was how dry my hands got from working with the dough.

But overall this was an exciting two-day kids project that I’m sure we’ll be repeating soon.
