Real Parenting for Real Kids gives easily digestible positive parenting tips

When I was reading a book I’d received to review the other evening I couldn’t’ put it down. I wanted to ignore the evening’s to-do list and curl up on the sofa to keep reading instead.

The book I was reading was Real Parenting for Real Kids, which was launched in April.

I had the chance to meet the lovely author Melissa Hood, who is also founder of positive parenting course provider The Parent Practice, at the book launch party at Fulham’s Nomad Books (see picture above), and I’m very impressed with what she’s achieved.

She comes across as the type of person I would want to take parenting advice from – someone who’s experienced, knows the research and also has the ability to connect with parents and relate to everyday challenges.

That’s why I’ve been excited about the easy-to-digest book too. I keep finding myself in challenging parenting situations, and I’m hungry to learn all about how to get this right.

After reading more in the book last night, I realised I should get my little one more involved in decision-making, as I may have ended up being too controlling in my attempt to be consistent. The book has helped me think about the background for different behaviour and how I should handle the challenging situations based on my discoveries.

The book features a number of examples, making it easy to relate to, and it is practically like a guidebook, split into sections on different skills and sections on how to apply the skills to everyday life. This week, I’ve read up on family values and positive discipline–two of the skills sections–and the pasta jar reward system we’re using at home, which is also mentioned in the book, has been in frequent use.

It looks like we’ll have a full jar later this week with so much positive behaviour to celebrate, and I can’t wait to see the dry pasta reach the rim of the jar, as I’m super excited about the reward we’ve agreed on–a mummy-daughter sleepover in Big Girl’s room.

Real Parenting for Real Kids: Enabling Parents to Bring Out the Best in Their Children is available to buy on The Parent Practice website and from Amazon (£16.99)
