Review: New children’s afternoon tea menu at Gallery Mess in Chelsea

‘Look at my food, mummy!’

Baby Girl’s face lit up as soon as her food arrived at the table. I was excited too and pulled out my camera straight away. The Little Artists Tea at Gallery Mess in the Saatchi Gallery on Duke of York Square was presented on an easel-shaped plate and came with a paint tube with cake topping. Wow.

We had been invited to try this recently-launched Little Artists Tea, and Baby Girl and I, who both like being creative, loved the idea of a DIY cupcake. I could enjoy the classic afternoon tea, while she was busy decorating her own cake. The Little Artists Tea turned out to be a pretty perfect way for Baby Girl to have a fun afternoon this half term and for me to enjoy a relaxing time in a smart Chelsea restaurant.

In addition to using the paint tube to decorate her cake, she also used the variety of toppings on her plate to make the cake more colourful while sipping on her babyccino. She had different fruit cut in mini pieces on her plate, including blueberries and strawberries, and there were lots of options for creating a dream cake.

When she’d finished with the cake–and the macaroon from my afternoon tea–I also managed to persuade her to try her child-friendly tea sandwiches.

After an hour of nibbling on our treats, we were pleased to see the friendly restaurant manager bring us a few extra napkins. With a clean face, Baby Girl could dance out of Gallery Mess–which is also great for alfresco dining–and try out some of her latest ballet moves on busy Duke of York Square.

The Little Artists Tea (£7.50 per person) is  available daily. Gallery Mess also serves a traditional afternoon tea for grown-ups.
