Review: The excitement of seeing Peppa Pig’s Big Splash at Criterion

Peppa Pig's Big Splash Criterion London Peppa Pig Daddy Pig Mr Potato HeadI expected Baby Girl to have a good time on Friday, but I wasn’t expecting to see her standing in my lap, leaning over the seat in front of us and pointing at the stage while shrieking with excitement. She loved seeing Peppa Pig live in Peppa Pig’s Big Splash.

We were invited to West End theatre Criterion to see the press performance of Peppa Pig’s Big Splash on Friday, and it was all very exciting for me and 15-month old Baby Girl.

When theatre staff helped us carry the buggy downstairs to the stalls and told us there were two acts with a 20-minute interval in between, I asked if the closest exit would be open in the interval. I assumed the show could potentially be too long for my little one, and that it would be best to leave at that point.

But I was wrong. The cute puppets – particularly the huge Daddy Pig puppet – fun songs, dancing and audience interaction kept Baby Girl entertained, and there was no point leaving after the first 30-minute act. She downed a smoothie in the interval, and was ready to lean over the dad in front of us again in no time.

The second act was particularly fun, with real water splashing over the stalls during a champion puddle jumping competition . And when Baby Girl started getting wriggly, we all had to stand up to jump–brilliant timing and great fun.

And it felt pretty fantastic to be able to go to a West End performance with a fifteen-month old baby and for us both to leave with a big smile.

Peppa Pig’s Big Splash is on at Criterion Theatre until 5 January 2014, and the touring production will travel throughout the UK and Ireland until October 2014.
