The day baby starts solids

WeaningToday is the big day. It feels like it’s Christmas Day. I’m so excited. I’ve prepared for the event for the past two weeks. Everything is cleaned, and I can’t wait to see the reaction on her face. Baby Girl is officially starting solids.

I’ve been back and forth about when to start so many times now. Breastfeeding is excellent for travelling, and we’re not starting Baby Girl on solids for practical reasons.

It’s all about the reflux, which apparently often improves when babies start solids. Baby Girl has only recently turned five months, and although the standard advice is to wait until six monhts, we’ve discussed the timing with her paediatrician.

Today it is. Baby Girl’s life is about to change. The magic food will be made up of one teaspoon of baby rice and three teaspoons of expressed breast milk.

After that I guess I’ll know for sure if it really is upsetting to get dressed in clothes with arms and be awake without anyone singing nursery rhymes – or if reflux really was to blame for every little cry.

My baby girl had terrible reflux, wasn’t ever actually sick with it but made her very unhappy! Although she coped considerably well. It wasn’t in fact diagnosed until after I introduced solids and was something that I worked out myself! Unfortunately it continued until after she was one year old but gradually I managed to start reducing the baby gaviscon which I was still putting in her bottles (after finished breast feeding at about 8months). Don’t expect miracles, but gradually it does improve and as they get bigger and stronger you realise that the reflux is less of an issue. We are now at 20months and no reflux issues generally, woohoo!

Sorry to hear your little one had reflux for so long, but great that it’s completely gone now! I really hope my one will get better soon too, but I do realise that it won’t happen over night. It wasn’t exactly much baby rice I managed to feed her yesterday either. And the reflux has of course not magically disappeared after that one meal.. I guess I just have to be patient!
