When baby refuses to take a bottle

Baby Girl wants to eat on everything she gets her hands on. The only thing she doesn’t want anywhere near her mouth these days is her bottle. She much prefers her dresses, tights or toys. Anything goes as long as it’s not the bottle.

I’m putting it down to the fact that she’s very conscious about eating locally-sourced produce. It must be the latest fad she follows. She’s just taking it a bit far. She insists on having her milk straight from source.

But I’m not willing to work with her on this one. I’m trying to give her some milk from a bottle every day. Yesterday I was set on trying until she had managed 20ml from her bottle, but she won. There’s just so much screaming I can take in one day.

I’m trying everything – twisting the bottle, moving her from breast to bottle without her noticing, different teats – but nothing works.

I need it to work by the weekend though. Her babysitter is coming for a few hours, so I’m counting on the fact that how long fads are followed is something that runs in the family. If we’re to go by how long Daddy T’s workout fads tend to be in season, I’m sure she’ll be good by Friday at least.

Hey, it can be a bit of a nightmare – my son decided he didn’t want the bottle anymore the day before my husband was best man at a wedding – no amount of trickery/different teats/persuasion etc worked, ended up completely changing our plans and running back and forwards to grandparents all day…when we had babysitters he would take a tiny bit and then refuse – in the end I gave up trying because it was too traumatic and looking back I don’t think I’d bother again and just go with the flow more, it doesn’t last for long – our son took to the bottle again a month or so after starting solids as if he’d never been away from it, by which time he was BF-ing less and so I didn’t really need him to have the bottle…most of my friends had exactly the same experience – good luck!

Thank you, Susanna. I guess it’s not long until I’ll be breastfeeding less, which will make her less dependent on me. But I bought the NUK bottle today, and I had a bit more success with that. She took 20ml of that bottle at least, so it’s going in the right direction.. Thank you very much for sharing your experience and advice. Tine
