Where to buy your first oilcloth in Chelsea

Before having a baby, I would never have pictured myself shopping for oilcloth fabrics. It’s just not me. Or it didn’t use to be me. But after Baby Girl started eating solids last year, I suddenly found myself in the basement of the Cath Kidston shop on King’s Road desperately looking for a few metres of this handy invention called oilcloth.

Yesterday I realised I wasn’t the only one who decided to cover our table in a wipe-clean tablecloth after a few weeks of weaning Baby Girl. I visited a friend with a 7-month old and noticed their living room had changed too. She was also suddenly the proud owner of a dotted oilcloth.

The good news is that there are a range of different styles of oilcloths and coated fabrics to choose from in Cath Kidston (see picture above) and Peter Jones on King’s Road in Chelsea. Although I never wanted one before we had Baby Girl, I now love the oilcloth, as it’s extremely practical when Baby Girl wants to paint all over the place, has friends over, or is simply eating messy food with her hands.
