Planning an Italian getaway to Lake Como

When the new generation of jet setting grandparents start using WhatsApp you know you’re in for trouble. While we’re at times finding it challenging to venture outside M25 with two young kids in tow, I’m regularly receiving updates from around the world from the over 60s. One of the places they’ve visited while I’ve been at home changing nappies and removing food stains is Lake Como in Italy, and after seeing the pictures on WhatsApp I feel even more annoyed we haven’t visited this beautiful destination.

I had Lake Como on my list of places to go before kids when we made the most of weekends, spouse programmes and holiday days, and since then it somehow dropped off our radar–despite frequently reading about it in magazines where Lake Como is at times referred to as a favourite destination for Hollywood stars like George Clooney.

Bellagio StaircaseLooking at places around Lake Como like Bellagio and Laglio now, it seems like Lake Como would make an ideal destination for a kid-free getaway–or a holiday with older children–and it therefore became my choice for the GoEuro Travel Inspiration Competition.

The stunning five-star Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio seems like a gem for parents wanting to escape busy London life, or take the family on an active holiday with mountain biking, tennis and motor boat trips. With a beautiful view of the lake and mountains behind, it must be a pretty fantastic place to recharge the batteries for both young and old.

Historic Bellagio boasts romantic restaurants and fashion boutiques, and Grandma N and Grandpa P texted me pictures showing Bellagio as a charming town with steep and narrow pathways leading down to the lake.

I have no problems picturing Daddy T and myself sitting on a hotel terrace in Bellagio and sipping a drink while Instagramming the wonderful views.

Bliss!

Bellagio is around 1 hour and 20 minutes from Milan Linate airport and 1 hour and 45 minutes from Milan Malpensa airport
