Review: Downton Abbey The Movie for a winter delight

I’ve been on a Christmas film spree for months, but I’ve finally realised it might be time to branch out now that February has arrived.

In autumn, several couple friends planned a cinema evening to go see historical period drama Downton Abbey The Movie, and since Daddy T and I didn’t go, I was thrilled when I was asked to review the film instead.

Downton Abbey The Movie is now available on Digital, Blu-ray and DVD from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, which suits me perfectly as I now seldom go to the cinema to watch grown-up films. Having heard about Downton Abbey The Movie for months now, it also made for an ideal film to watch at home on a drab winter evening.

The film continues the story from Julian Fellowes’ popular TV series about the Crawley family and their grand home Downton Abbey, and sees the return of the many beloved characters like retired butler Mr Carson (played by Jim Carter) and the Crawley family’s Lady Violet (played by Maggie Smith) and Lady Mary (played by Michelle Dockery).

Set in the early 20th century, the film tells the story about the family and their household staff preparing for King George V and Queen Mary to come stay at Downton Abbey on the royal’s tour of Yorkshire. As the Downton household staff are sidelined by a royal entourage, the team devises a plan to defend Downton Abbey and demonstrate their greatness.

With period costumes, a stunning set and historic references, Downton Abbey The Movie gives viewers an insight into life in 20th century Britain and old-fashioned etiquette, and is a treat for fans of the long-running TV show.
